The 2008 ANSS program at the ALA Annual Meeting in Anaheim, CA is entitled “The Lady, the Tramp, and the Lion King: Mixed Messages About Gender, Race, and Ethnicity in Disney’s Magic Kingdom”. It will take place on June 29, 2008 from 8 am till noon in the Anaheim Convention Center. Room: 304 A/B.
The program takes place in the midst of what is arguably the largest cultural enterprise in the world, Disney. Through an interdisciplinary panel of speakers, the program will explore the representation of race and gender in Disney media and will present an opportunity to think critically about, and perhaps challenge, preconceived notions about Disney and its effect on popular culture. This program is cosponsored by WSS and AFAS.
Speakers include Betsy Hearne, PhD (Professor of Library Science, University of Illinois); Claudine Michel, PhD (University of California Santa Barbara); Patricia Little, PhD (California State University San Bernardino); and Keith Harris, PhD (University of California Riverside); and Moderator, Rebecca Blakeley, Government Documents Librarian at McNeese State University.
